CROWNS AND BRIDGES
Crowns
Crowns are usually made from porcelain/ceramic material, or consist of a porcelain coating on a metal backing. They restore the size, function and shape of a tooth that may have been damaged through an accident, a loose or missing filling, from tooth decay, undergone root canal therapy or natural ageing.
Used on front and back teeth, a crown is sometimes referred to as a “cap” because it is custom-made to fit over a specially prepared tooth, prior to being cemented into place.
For a weak tooth or one with a large filling, a crown will protect the tooth and prevent any further chipping or cracking. Because of the heavy chewing forces placed on the back teeth, the addition of a crown is often a preferred course of treatment to a large filling.

Bridges
A bridge can be utilised to replace one or more missing teeth, and is an option for patients who are unsuitable for implants or who prefer this choice for some other reason.
Bridges are secured by crowns bonded to natural teeth on either side of the space they are filling. Aside from the benefits of their appearance, bridges are important as they prevent healthy teeth on either side of the gap from moving and encroaching on the space left by the missing tooth or teeth. This could lead to changes in the bite and periodontal problems as well as encouraging other dental problems.
Bridges are traditionally made from porcelain or porcelain over metal. They usually require two appointments to complete.
At the first appointment we prepare the supporting teeth so the bridge can be made on them. An impression is taken and a temporary bridge is made and fitted, while the permanent bridge is constructed at a dental laboratory. At the second visit, the temporary bridge is removed and the permanent one is fitted.
Our team will be able to advise you on the best techniques for brushing and flossing your new bridge and on maintaining optimal gum health.
